International Youth Day -- 12 August 2021 12 August is #YouthDay — a chance to highlight the need to include youth in decision-making at every level. To mark the day, read and sign the #ForNature Youth Manifesto via @GYBN_CBD : https://t.co/S4V720dZmKIt"s time to #StopTheSame and build a better future for all. 🌏🌍🌎 pic.twitter.com/IHOfRwzNGj— UN Biodiversity (@UNBiodiversity) August 12, 2021 The work of the Convention on Biological Diversity has been greatly enriched by youth. From their involvement in global decision-making to community actions, youth have become full partners in the fight against biodiversity loss. They are partners with vivid minds and unique perspectives, who can help define strategic priorities and implement creative solutions. To enable youth to engage to their full potential, our formal institutions need to create the enabling conditions for youth.Under the Convention on Biological Diversity, such enabling conditions take various forms. Fast-tracking action in support of post-2020 global biodiversity framework The Global Environment Facility (GEF), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) have issued a joint statement of support to commit to fast-track support to governments to prepare for the rapid implementation of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework. To that end, the GEF, in partnership with UNDP and UNEP, will provide immediate financial and technical support to developing country governments drawing from GEF-7 enabling activity resources in the biodiversity focal area. The framework, scheduled for adoption in May 2022 at part two of the UN Biodiversity Conference, will need urgent action to jumpstart its implementation at the scale that the current loss of biodiversity requires. Activities envisioned in the fast-track support include a review and identification of opportunities around policy coherence and biodiversity mainstreaming across national policy, assessments of national monitoring systems, and an...

International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples -- 9 August 2021 Although indigenous peoples constitute 6.2 per cent of the world population, they represent the most significant portion of global linguistic and cultural diversity. Indigenous peoples’ livelihoods depend on biodiversity.Indigenous peoples and local communities are often at the forefront of conservation efforts, but are disproportionally affected by biodiversity loss. To protect the web of life on Earth, the full and effective participation of indigenous peoples and local communities is critical in all decision-making.The theme, "Leaving No One Behind: Indigenous peoples and the call for a new social contract" speaks directly to the heart of the Convention and to the development of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework. A social contract refers to written or unwritten agreements, inspired by values which speak to all those it addresses. In many cases, such agreements detail the purpose and sequence of steps to meet shared values.Building a soci...

2021 Singapore Index on Cities’ Biodiversity out now The updated and revised Singapore Index on Cities’ Biodiversity, published in September 2021, includes wider coverage of the services biodiversity and ecosystems provide to people. It also simplifies measuring and evaluation tools and enhances advice on the application of its expanded series of indicators. The Singapore Index, launched in 2008 and part of the Convention on Biological Diversity’s (CBD) Technical Series, has been used by many cities around the world to evaluate and monitor the progress of their biodiversity conservation efforts, and will assist cities in implementing the post-2020 global biodiversity framework.Covering a broad range of indicators such as native biodiversity, ecosystem services and the governance and management of biodiversity, cities which have applied the Index, have found the framework useful in building their capabilities in biodiversity conservation, setting priorities for conservation actions and budget allocation.Recognizing the cr...

How the public can participate in WG2020-3 The overall approach for the organization of the first part of the WG2020-3 meeting follows those applied to the formal virtual meetings of the subsidiary bodies held in May and June 2021, taking into account also the experience of those sessions and the lessons learned. The timing and modalities for organization of the meeting respond to the current extraordinary circumstances as related to the COVID-19 pandemic and do not set a precedent for the organization of similar meetings under the Convention on Biological Diversity in the future. Youth can be invited by governmen...
