Local filly triumphs in Grassroots at Hanover Raceway After battling against the province’s best two-year-old pacing fillies for the last two months, Power Of An Angel returned home to Hanover Raceway and found her way to the winner’s circle in the first of five $21,450 Ontario Sires Stakes Grassroots divisions on Sept. 4. “Finally something went our way and we got a little lucky,” said trainer and Hanover resident Roger Gebhardt. “I always liked her. She was a very nice filly. I broke her and trained her down and then I sent her down to Martin Lachance for four months, expecting her to do well in the Golds, and things didn’t turn out. She had some really bad luck in the Gold Series.” Fortune smiled on Power Of An Angel on Sept. 4 as she left well from Post 2 and tucked in behind fan favourite Warrawee Xpat. As that filly rang up fractions of :28.4, 1:00.1 and 1:29, and then fought off a challenge from Speaker Nancy around the final turn, driver James MacDonald of Guelph waited for his opportunity with Power Of An Angel. Coming off the turn he slid Power Of An Angel out three wide and the filly sprinted home to a one-length victory in 1:58.2. Speaker Nancy finished second and Warrawee Xpat settled for third. “I was just really fortunate, a lot of times you don’t get out of the two-hole there, but I got to kind of swing out across and when she saw some real estate at the top of the stretch she went by,” said MacDonald, who was making his first appearance in the filly’s race bike. Power Of An Angel made two starts in the Gold Series, finishing sixth and eighth, and also took on North America’s best in the Aug. 28 Eternal Camnation where she finished sixth. The Sunshine Beach daughter’s only top three finish came in a July 29 overnight event at Woodbine Mohawk Park where she was second by a neck. “Martin (Lachance) had her ready, it just wasn’t working out, so I decided to bring her home and race her,” said Gebhardt, whose wife Carol Gebhardt owns Power Of An Angel. “I thought she was a better filly than what she’s turned out to be, but who knows, it’s surprising how they get a bit of confidence, she might, she’s faster than what she’s shown so far. Anyway, we’re quite happy today to finally get the monkey off our back.” Gebhardt expects Power Of An Angel will make her next start in the fifth Grassroots Leg at Woodbine Mohawk Park on Sept. 20, with an eye to finishing among the top 20 point earners and qualifying for the Sept. 30 Grassroots Semi-Final. The top five finishers from each semi-final advance to the Oct. 9 Grassroots Championship. In addition to Power Of An Angel, MacDonald also drove Girl Scout Cookie and In The Mood to their first Ontario Sires Stakes victories on Sept. 4. “It was a terrific day in Hanover,” said MacDonald. “It rarely happens, you go to those half-mile tracks and it’s pretty tough, I guess I just had the right ones and the right posts today.” Immediately after steering In The Mood to her third lifetime win, MacDonald was heading home to prepare for a big night of Grand Circuit racing at Woodbine Mohawk Park with drives in races totalling $1.76 million. The other two Grassroots divisions were won by division point leader Dewitt For Josie, piloted by Guelph resident Louis-Philippe Roy, and T Time Pat, with Bob McClure of Rockwood in the race bike. Complete results from the afternoon of racing are available at standardbredcanada.ca/racing/results/data/r0904hnvrn.dat and replays can be viewed on Hanover Raceway’s YouTube channel. Live racing is to wrap up for the season at Hanover Raceway on Sept. 18. Post time is 1:30 p.m. A charity barbecue and free concert is also planned that day.

Letter to the Editor: South Bruce residents urged not to sign This week my mailbox received a new pressure tactic from the anti-DGR crowd. This group of local anti-nuclear activists has been feverishly trying every tactic possible to pressure the municipal government of South Bruce to stop the DGR process prematurely. The current flyer is demanding a 2022 referendum on the topic – a full year ahead of the schedule for South Bruce to declare whether we are a “willing host” for Canada’s Deep Geological Repository for spent nuclear fuel. Now the word is that this group will be going door-to-door to pressure residents into signing a petition. Before you sign anything, I think you should consider what your visitors are not likely going to tell you. First, they will tell you 2022 is the perfect time for a referendum. Wrong. The process agreed to between South Bruce and the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) calls for willingness to be established no sooner than 2023. The extensive geological study currently underway will not even complete until well into 2023. They will tell you a referendum is the only fair and democratic way to decide the issue. Not so. France’s DGR, which is years ahead of Canada’s in development, is also in a quiet rural community. France, of course, has a democratic system of government similar to our own. Did they hold a referendum? No. Instead, municipal government representatives visited each and every household to discuss the matter, and gather people’s opinions. Lo and behold, when residents were away from the yellow signs and pressure tactics, most of them said they were in favour, so the local government indicated the community was willing. As a result, France is likely to have a safe, permanent solution for spent nuclear fuel, and the local community will prosper from decades of steady investment and local employment. Your uninvited guests may tell you that no DGR can ever be safe, that “water will get in”, and the nuclear waste will end up polluting the Great Lakes. This is the closest thing we have to pure fantasy. The current plan is to build the DGR some 650 metres underground in the Coburg rock formation, which has been there and been stable for some 450 million years. The waste will be stored in virtually indestructible containers, and sealed in water-impermeable bentonite clay. The waste is not water-soluble anyway – it’s ceramic. Local fuel handler Steve Benninger demonstrated in a recent video that when water flows over radioactive spent fuel, the water does NOT become radioactive. The DGR is a big, complex project, that takes years of exploration, development, checking and double-checking to ensure every possible problem has been anticipated and every risk sufficiently mitigated. You can’t do this stuff over night – the science and learning take time. If the project goes ahead, it will mean hundreds of long-term, high-paying, high-tech jobs for our children and grandchildren. I think we owe it to them to trust the science, and follow the process. If in the end, we decide we don’t want the DGR on reasonable, rational grounds, so be it. But if we end the process early due to the fear mongering of a special interest group, shame on us. If you’re willing to listen like me, or even if you’re the tiniest bit undecided, I respectfully urge you not to sign the petition. Sincerely, Tony Zettel, RR5 Mildmay

Letter to the Editor: Full time transit system needed I am the acting Chair for the Kincardine Area Seniors Advisory Action Committee, KASAAC. We are a group of like minded locals who have come together and improve the quality of life for all of our residents, not only seniors. Recently we conducted a transportation needs assessment survey. The survey results suggested that a full service transit system was not necessary at this time. However, the survey results also suggested that there are residents who are woefully under serviced in meeting their transportation requirements. These people are often our most vulnerable with physical and mental challenges and those with a modest income. The Saugeen Mobility and Regional Transportation (SMART) was implemented to address some these transportation service gaps. SMART is owned and 100% funded by the 9 member communities including Kincardine and Huron Kinloss. The SMART Board of Directors is composed of Mayors and Councillors from those 9 member communities. Over the last few years the SMART board of directors have imposed budget cuts which resulted in reduced services including no statutory holiday service. The 2021 Holiday schedule has no service (aside from dialysis) from 12 noon Dec 24th to Wed Dec 28 and 12 noon Dec 31 to Jan 4th. Because the statutory holidays fall on the weekends the following Monday and Tuesday are granted holidays. This gap in holiday service hours is not acceptable. Those dependent on these services may not be able to visit family and friends, attend faith based services or even shop. These are not special needs, these are basic needs that we all want to enjoy. I am calling on you to contact our local SMART reps Councillor Dave Cuyler and Councillor Ed McGugan and our local Mayor Glover and Mayor Twolan to correct this error and demonstrate that SMART exists as a service to those in need and a service we can be proud to support with our tax dollars. Regards, Randy Hughes Kincardine Area Seniors Advisory Action Committee
