Medford visits ATW ARFFMay 25, 2021Article by Rogue Valley International Medford Airport Captain Tony Incerty I recently had the privilege of attending the FAR Part 139 Annual Live Fire Exercises at the Fox Valley Technical College Aircraft Recue Fire Fighting Program. I was impressed at the level of expertise and the willingness to accommodate my training needs. The class was led by Instructor Ben Sokol and assisted by Jeremy Hanson and our own Captain Ben Holle of Austin Straubel Airport. This crew worked together seamlessly and had no hesitation providing constructive criticism as well as helpful tips for effective firefighting. To begin the class, I was given ample time to become familiar with their impeccably kept OshKosh Striker 6X6. Coming from a Rosenbauer, this was most advantageous for me to focus on approach and attack of the fires vs. fumbling around with controls due to unfamiliarity. I found that to be a refreshing change from past trainings at other locations that are more of a point and shoot strategy. I had the pleasure of attacking a wheel fire, engine fire, fuel spill fire and a combination to finish off the truck ops. A very unique feature I found here is that you can actually drive the Crash Truck through the burn pit and between a separated wing making it feel very real world for me.This facility also made use of a Cessna sized burn prop which I have not seen at any of the 4 other facilities I’ve used. We ran multiple scenarios on the handline inside of their Boeing 777 prop enabling me to use all of the techniques for an interior aircraft fire. At the end of the day, I was very pleased that I chose to attend Live Fire at the ATW ARFF Training Center and we plan to send more personnel there in the coming year. A huge thanks to the very skilled training crew for all of their attention and to Pro-Tec for allowing me this opportunity. Tulsa International Airport Welcomes New ARFF ProviderMay 11, 2021Article provided by Andrew Pierini, Tulsa International AirportTULSA, OK – May 11, 2021 – Tulsa International Airport (TUL) is pleased to welcome Pro-Tec Fire Services as the airport’s Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) provider as of March 1, 2021. The airport signed a five year contract in November 2020 with Pro-Tec for ARFF services, with three options to extend an additional five years, for a total of twenty years. The contract with Pro-Tec is expected to save the airport roughly $1 million annually, without reducing the level of safety and reliability to the airport and its passengers.Tulsa Airports Improvement Trust (TAIT) began reviewing all operating expenditures in late March of 2020 as the pandemic’s impact on airport revenues was materializing. The airport’s leadership team evaluated every expense, looking for savings in order to conserve airport resources. At that time, ARFF services were the single largest expense at Tulsa International Airport, comprising 18% of the airport’s budget for services. Pro-Tec was selected from a competitive proposal process by the TAIT Board in November 2020 and immediately began developing their onboarding plan. “We have been extremely impressed with Pro-Tec’s expertise and operating philosophy since they began providing ARFF services here at Tulsa International,” said Alexis Higgins, CEO of Tulsa Airports Improvement Trust. “Pro-Tec’s entire team has demonstrated their commitment to serving our airfield tenants and customers with the level of service, safety, and quality that is expected in our industry.”Pro-Tec Fire Services is a Wisconsin-based private contractor that is the largest provider of contracted Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting services in the United States. The company provides ARFF services to over twenty airports in the United States and Canada, including Will Rogers World Airport in Oklahoma City, OK, and Ardmore Airpark in Ardmore, OK. Pro-Tec has been in operation since 1974 and was the first of its kind to offer contracted Aircraft Rescue Firefighting services.“Pro-Tec Fire Services is delighted and honored to have been selected by the Tulsa International Airport to become their ARFF Services provider,” the company said in a statement. “We pride ourselves on offering a competitive, responsive and professional service package. This coupled with a culture founded upon safety and lasting relationships was recognized by the Airport. We thank the Airport for their selection and look forward to providing them value for the long term.”...Read more...

Employee of 1st Quarter 2021April 1, 2021We had a number of nominations for Employee of the 1st Quarter that it was impossible to narrow it down to just one, so we decided to do something a little different and pick TWO employees of the 1st Quarter.First up is FF Colin Dyck at Calgary International Airport. Colin was nominated by Deputy Fire Chief Brett Gerein and Captain Chad Harper for the exemplary leadership he has shown in their Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) department.Gerein’s crew has taken on the task to oversee all Department Training, and this is the reason he is recommending Colin’s name for the Employee of 1st Quarter. Training involves the creation and expansion of their training portfolio, reviewing and providing feedback from crew training assignments, audit department training, creating training templates on Emergency Reporting, assign crew training assignments every month, and most recently transitioning the department to paperless training. In the 1st Qtr this year, Colin has contributed immensely in all of these tasks and is a big reason why the Department Training runs more efficiently. He has been a driving force along with the crew for our overall success. Colin has taken the lead as he was given this immense task. His computer skills and knowledge with Excel has given him all the necessary tools to create forms and documents. He has helped create an entire new Training Portfolio for the department which is now well versed, organized and overall more efficient. He reviews crew training assignments with care, thoroughness, and provides constructive feedback to make these presentations better for everyone. Calgary recently transitioned their department to Paperless training, all department training reports are now saved digitally with digital signatures, Colin was a major contributor with this initiative. Gerein’s crew would not be where we currently are with training if it wasn’t for Colin’s contributions over these past months. Colin joined the Calgary team in March 2019 and has had perfect attendance in those two years. He has exemplified professionalism, hard work, initiative each and every shift and continues to be a leader in our department. In the two years Colin has assumed the position of a Fire Fighter, his affable nature, clear insight and guiding vision has garnered the respect and admiration from his peers and Officers. In these difficult and forever changing times, the depth of challenges, Colin has always remained positive and leads by example. He does not shy away from the tough times and faces them head on. Gerein cannot express within the limits of this short description all of the attributes that Colin possesses to qualify for nomination for Employee of the Quarter. Rest assured that the list would be too exhaustive. If he had to distill the description to its core, it would include those tangibles: leadership, decisiveness, and responsibility. However of greater importance would be the list of intangibles that make up the fabric of a true leader: respect, humility, commitment, dedication, humor, honesty, integrity, transparency, hard work and resiliency. Next up is Lieutenant Daniel Flores at Boeing in San Antonio. Daniel was nominated by Fire Chief Juan Cardona.Lt. Flores has always been an exceptional employee. Recently, when Texas underwent a winter freeze, the Boeing site was not spared any good fortune as major failures occurred all across the site with the permanently installed fire suppression systems. With his fast thinking, knowledge of the equipment, and experience, Lt. Flores was able to avoid significant water damage to all areas that were effected. (Feeder lines from Risers/above sprinkler systems/valves, etc.) In addition to his fast thinking under pressure, he has taken on the role of one of our departments training instructors and has provided us with excellent training classes....Read more...

ARFF Vehicle PositioningMarch 11, 2021Have you ever wondered why ARFF (Aircraft Rescue Firefighting) vehicles park a certain way at an incident? Or why on a video you saw of a plane on fire, the ARFF vehicles are approaching the incident from different angles while pumping their agent and driving?ARFF vehicles are capable of spraying a tremendous amount of agent from their two front mounted turrets at an aircraft incident scene. Their specific design allows for the truck to conduct an industry coined “pump and roll” tactic that allows for them to drive and spray agent at the same time. Not only do they have two front mounted turrets to help extinguish fires, but depending on the department’s needs, could also have between one and two pre-connected handlines, and a booster reel to aid with interior fire attacks when warranted. The priority of the first ARFF vehicle is to provide a snapshot to all incoming ARFF vehicles via radio of what is occurring. Once this has been relayed, their task is then to provide a safe exit (rescue path) for all occupants exiting the aircraft. This can seem odd to the untrained as the first ARFF vehicle will most likely be positioned on the side where the fire is not burning – the reason is that airline employees are trained to evacuate planes from the side that has no fire. It then becomes to job of the other two ARFF vehicles to extinguish the fire around the aircraft while the first vehicle protects the evacuating passengers. While approaching the incident scene, the first arriving truck will also position all remaining ARFF vehicles as to execute an effective incident action plan according to the “tactical priorities” which are rescue, fire suppression, property conservation, and reduction of environmental impact. Using the wind as an advantage, the ARFF vehicles protect the evacuating passengers, extinguish the fire and mitigate the incident all from the cab of the ARFF vehicle.Pictured, Pro-Tec Fire Services Canada crew participated in a training exercise which consisted of positioning of the ARFF vehicles and water application at a simulated aircraft incident. All three vehicles demonstrated proper vehicle positioning, and water application during the incident. All our firefighters work hard in maintaining a high level of readiness via training exercises, all in preparation for an incident that could happen at any time.C/O: Captain McPherson...Read more...

The Fire Department at Stennis Airport has been staffed by firefighters who are independently contracted to provide ARFF services.“Our efforts couldn’t be possible without our mutual aid partners – Kiln Volunteer Fire Department, Diamondhead Fire Department and the Bay St. Louis Fire Department – which will continue forward under the new contract,” says Chanse Watson, Airport Director.Stennis Airport tenants and transient pilots can expect superior service from Pro-Tec’s additional staffing and services, he states, noting, “Our published ARFF services will be provided 24/7/365 with increase in services provided as needed.”These services will ensure the Airport remains competitive in the aviation market not only locally but in the region as well.“Pro-Tec will respond to emergencies but also will become a familiar face to our customers,” Watson says. “The team will be assisting our office with conducting routine inspections of the airfield to ensure FAA compliance among other beneficial services to our airport community. It’s about safety, security and customer service.”Watson says Pro-Tec aims to become part of the community.“As the gateway to Hancock County and South Mississippi, we want to make sure that Stennis International Airport provides both a professional level of service and a positive experience for our customers,” he says....Read more...
